Audio problem making me go crazy

I don't know if this is a common problem so excuse me if I'm the 50th moron who's posted this question. Also, I don't know much about computers. I didn't even know what a driver was before a few months ago when I started having this problem.

I've been struggling with a whale of an audio issue lately. I've just replaced the hard drive on my 3 year old compaq presario R4000 notebook after the one in it had gone bad. Now everything runs smooth and fine, except there's no sound.

When I download the audio driver for my computer from hp's website, called hp conexant ac-audio link driver, it refuses to install and an error message that says 'windows cannot find \swsetup\audio\setup.exe make sure you typed the name correctly'. comes up with a DOS window in the background. Consequently this is the same issue I kept having a while back with my old HD, when my computer repeatedly kept crashing and I had to reformat and reinstall windows 2 or 3 times.

According to the information I've gathered since then I'm pretty sure I have to get rid of the legacy audio drivers that can be accessed through control panel and device manager, but there's no way to remove them. There's no option to remove or uninstall them anywhere, and nowhere on the internet have I found a definitive answer as to how to get rid of them.

Like I said, I have no idea how common this problem is, I've seen plenty of people with issues relating to the LAD but not really anything about conflicts between the LAD and specific drivers from the manufacturer.

What should I do? How do I get rid of my LAD? SHOULD I get rid of them? Can I get some other driver that won't cause a conflict with the the LAD or is it likely that's even the problem?

please help, I'm going quite insane from this problem.

Did you use a Recovery CD from HP/Compaq to reinstall XP?

yes I did. I used an HP restore disk to reinstall XP home edition. Its SP2 if that has any relevance.

when my OS kept imploding with my original hard drive I used a different Windows XP start up disk that I assumed was the one that came with my computer, well as it turns out it wasn't the one as the disk I just used is actually labeled 'for distribution with a new hp PC', this first disk was not as I recall labled with SP2, that's all I remember about it as its been lost for a while. Anyway I was having the same problem then as I am having now.

Thanks for reading my post. Please, go on.

If nothing in that troubleshooter worked for you I also see these ideas:

    Can you find C:\SwSetup?

I see this note regarding using the recovery/driver CD:

Install Audio Driver (Microsoft UAA Bus Driver for HD Audio) - Goto SwSetup\1UAA\Disk1 and run setup.exe. Reboot now.
    - after reboot, a Microsoft UAA Function Driver for High Definition Audio - Conexant Waikiki with a Question mark is shown in Sound, Video, and game controllers
    - Run the SwSetup\Audio\Setup.exe to "UPGRADE" Conexant High Definition Audio
Another try: Search the HP XP CD for SwSetup and SwSetup\Audio\Setup.exe

If found try to copy to C:\SwSetup

well none of your suggestions worked, but they did help...

I went into SWsetup, found the downloaded file for the conexant audio driver, opened it, clicked on setup, and the driver installed with no problem. I have sound now, finally. Apparently the Legacy Audio drivers and all my other devices had nothing to do with it. Still, its odd that it wouldn't install for me after downloading it, and that I had to instill the driver in this way.

I would have never known to look in SWsetup if it wasn't for you bringing it up, thanks alot. I'll be sure to come back here for my computer needs.
