Continuing start up problems on XP
Hi all. New here. Have just completed making my computer better and purchased a new power box to try resolve my continuing problem.
When I turn on the computer, it comes up with letters and numbers and other symbols all over my screen. My computer only beeps once very shortly but have no idea about the memory refresh timer error. If i switch the comp back off and on a few times it starts perfectly. I am totally at a loss. When im booted up and everything running, its like driving a ferrari, no problems at all with lots of speed.
Can any body help or have the same problem?
Thank you
I have an ASROCK P4i65GV Running windows XP with sp2
2 Ram Sticks of 1048 each low density
80gb
GE Force 7600GS 256mb
420w powerbox

Are you getting a written Memory Refresh error or are you equating the one beep with an AMI BIOS code?
Can you verify that you have an AMI BIOS?
That board has BIOS updates here:
http://www.asrock.com/mb/download.asp?Model=P4i65GV
Also you could try MemTest:

This could also be an issue with the Graphics Memory rather than the board RAM.

OK - memory is fine. Done a test on graphics card using pcpitstop. Says its fine. Updated all drivers and everything. Should I remove the graphics card and put it back in?
I know when I changed the card it didnt ask for anything or to remove the old memory card drivers (even though i searched for them to remove)

Did you run MemTest?
If you changed the graphics card you must remove all the old drivers before installing the most recent.
Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs.
Try starting over. NVIDIA released the latest drivers last week.
If you had an ATI card prior to NVIDIA also remove those drivers.

ok - im a bit of a dunce. But can i delete the nvdia in add/remove program and start again. And i cant see any evidence of an ati card driver. is there any easy way to see what to keep and what to remove without reading every manual goin g?
Thanks - and sorry for being so amateur. But its a learning curve for me.

First off answers to these questions would help:
1) Are you getting a written Memory Refresh error or are you equating the one beep with an AMI BIOS code?
2) Can you verify that you have an AMI BIOS?
3) Did you run MemTest?
4) Did you have this same problem before changing your graphics card?
5) When you changed the PSU did you make all the necessary connections to the motherboard?
As to drivers first off download the latest and just save it on your desktop.
After installing you can delete it from your desktop.
http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us
Then click NVIDIA drivers in Add/Remove > Remove > Graphics only
After reboot click on the download on your desktop and install.
If the problem persists you may need a newer BIOS and or re-test your memory depending on the answers to the first three questions.

Just to add:
If you need help with any of these questions please ask.
The answers are important but I certainly didn't mean to intimidate you with all of them. In case I did: sorry.
