This is the self-extracting executable that contains the update package for Windows® XP Service Pack 3. Windows® XP Service Pack 3 (SP3) includes all previously released updates for the operating system. This update also includes a small number of new functionalities, which do not significantly change customers’ experience with the operating system.

Have you installed it jephree? There doesn't seem to be that much that's exciting about the latest release does there, just upgraded functionality, no really new and ground breaking features. Didn't really expect there to be though.

i installed this just before Christmas does not change performance or anything else that is noticeable.
i saw on a site somewhere cant remember where but the final release is supposed to be alot smaller in size and also make xp faster than vista with no sp's

I did not install this. Will wait for the final.

My impression was it was basically a cumulative bundle of all Critical Updates post SP2.

Mostly Security fixes. I have read that a certain "speed" increase might be involved but that just might be from optimizing all the separate updates over the last 2 years.

Anyway it should be out soon.

Windows XP Service Pack 3 Release Candidate 2 is available to the public. Specific registry settings will allow you to be offered SP3 via Windows Update.
Microsoft is allowing Windows XP Service Pack 2 machines to be offered Windows XP Service Pack 3 Release Candidate 2 via Windows Update. Windows XP Service Pack 3 will be offered on Windows Update when Service Pack 3 releases in the first half of 2008.
