    What are the exact errors?

Can you boot into Safe Mode?

    Some HAL ideas:

In a worse case scenario a Repair Install should retain your data and programs.

What is the make and model of the computer?

By Recovery Disk you are referring to say a Dell or HP CD for example?

The next worse case scenario is to slave this drive in another computer and extract the data then Clean Install.

You also might want to run the manufacturers diagnostic software on that hard drive.

The hard drive can be removed. Then an adapter can be used as seen here:

    http://articles.techrepublic.com.com...1-5160538.html

An external enclosure can also be used.

    As to HP:

The Windows operating system (OS) can be reinstalled, using the recovery disks, without destroying any existing programs or user data. This action is normally only performed if the PC does not start properly or does not boot into the Windows operating system.
