    Comp won't read CDs

Hi I have a Fujitsu Siemens computer which is running fine except suddenly it won't read data that I've recorded onto CDs. If I put in a pre recorded shop bought CD it opens it up fine but if I put in a CD that contains data or photos I've saved nothing happens. When I click 'my computer' icon and then the CD Rom drive it opens up as empty even though there's a full CD in the drive, yet if I put in another pre recorded CD it shows up. Also, it won't let me burn CDs. It takes me through the process but at the end when the job should be complete I'm still left with a blank CD. Any suggestions? I'm not very technical so all responses need to be explained in idiot speak - thanks.

How do I get a lens cleaner and how do I use it? Is it expensive? Thanks

Very cheap. It is a CD with a tiny brush fixed to the surface of the CD. Just shove it into your CD Drive and a bird will come up and tell you when the cleaning is complete.

Must be simple as even I know haw to use it?

    regards

Here is another thing or two to check for especially if you have added new software recently:

If you feel comfortable editing the registry, here are some steps:

Click the Start button, click Run. In the Open box, type regedit and then click OK.
Click the plus sign (+) next to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.
Click the plus sign (+) next to SYSTEM.
Click the plus sign (+) next to CurrentControlSet.
Click the plus sign (+) next to Control.
Click the plus sign (+) next to Class.
    Click {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}.

Once here click File in the upper left corner and choose: Export (this key)
Export to your Documents as a backup. If needed you can go back to this file and Import it back.

    Then:

On the right hand side of the window, click UpperFilters.
Click Edit on the menu bar.
Click Delete, and then click OK.
On the right-hand side of the window, click LowerFilters.
Click Edit on the menu bar.
Click Delete, and then click OK.
Click File, and then click Exit. Restart the computer normally

Also check UDMA/PIO settings under your IDE channel in the Device Manager.

If set to DMA try changing to PIO.
