    Unhappy INTERNET connection

I don'ty know too much about computers, but I can follow step by step instructions! My sons PC will not connect to the internet and looks as though it needs a good virus clean, but i cannot do this without connecting to the internet - or can I? Our cabled router is working fine and I have bought a new patch cable which looks as though it is fine, and I can 'ping' the bbc website address ok but only when numbers are entered (is this the ip address?) if i try and ping bbc.co.uk etc, it doesn't ping! Someone has told me to change the pc's IP address, which I have done, but still nothing, this could be a long process but I could do with some real help!

    Thank you in advance

In my own opinion, there is a small possibility that the virus causes you to be not able to connect. I think the problem would very possibly be on your setting of the router. You should call your internet service provider and let them help you with step by step setting up your router.

P.S. Maku sure to set your router to locate IP automatically.
P.S.II. You can have virus scan without internet connection, all you do is to buy the newest anti virus/spyware software in a store. These ones run without internet connection. Norton, McAfee, Windows Defender are the pretty popular ones.

    In reply to kyle_fei:

You can purchase the antivirus software in shops, but this will not have the newest definitions (you usualy have to update it when you first install it to get the latest updates)

You can, however download AVG for example, save it to a removable storage decive (usb drive/cd/external hard drive) and download the latest updates (save them to the removable storage, dont try to install them)

You can then install the antivirus on your computer and when it asks you to update, click "update from file" and find where you saved the update file. Then simply follow the on-screen instructions

Not to be mean or impolite, but what do you mean it looks like it needs a good virus clean? And there was really no need to change the IP address.

Hmmm...I'm thinking on this one. The only thing I can see is possible is that it might be your ISP. Did you remember to pay the Internet bill? haha, serisouly though, my internet connection went out because we forgotto pay the bill. It also might be your connections. Check all connections on the router, the wall jacks, the computer etc. In addition to the connections, the power connections are always helpful :P

Also, make sure that when you install the router (if that is your last resort) restart the computer.
