No sound when installed windows xp on new hard drive

I just replaced my only hard drive and installed windows xp. All newly installed programs work, but I no longer have any sound. Do you know what the problem might be? Thanks, Bill

Hi Bill and welcome to D-A-L,

Chances are you need to install the drivers for your sound card or the for the on-board sound on your motherboard.

If a card, see the card's manual or go out to the card maker's website and download the manual, or see instructions there.

If on-board sound, your motherboard or PC should have come with a utilities disk with drivers, or you can go out to the makers site and download the drivers. Also, you must make sure on-board sound device is enabled in the BIOS Setup Menu.

You can tell if you have on-board sound by the location of the speaker connection - it will be in the rear-panel I/O area, that area in the rear where you connect the mouse, keyboard, etc.
