    Sound Issues

Recently, I reinstalled Windows XP on my Dell Dimension 4500. After reinstalling all of the drivers, utilites, etc., I cannot get my computer to produce any sound. My sound card is an ADI 198x Integrated Audio. In device manager, I get this display when i view my "Other devices":

The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28)

To reinstall the drivers for this device, click Reinstall Driver.

This applies to the Multimedia Audio Controller. It has a yellow question mark next to it.

I thought that the drivers would come on the CDs, but obviously some are missing.

Any help? I've tried many things over the last two days.

Did you try to re-install driver or search for driver update thru the manager?

I've already tried both of these things. I tried re-downloading using the link Bear gave me...when Windows prompts me to install the new hardware, it can't find anything.

Windows prompts you to install the new hardware?

Are you saying the driver download cannot find the card?

In the Device Manager have you tried to disable Multimedia Audio Controller
& then subsequently enable? (Turn it off/ turn it on.)

Now I don't know what to do because the MAC is no longer under "Other Devices." Its not there at all...

I'm not sure if this is applicable, but both the SM Bus Controller and Universal Serial Bus Controller have a similar problem (No drivers installed with the question mark).

May I ask why you re-installed XP?

    Any similar issues before?

    Have you reinstalled SP1?

I reinstalled to get back the speed I had when i first bought my PC. Spyware and similar things have slowed it down.

I haven't had any problems like this in the past.

Sorry, I don't know what you mean by SP1...

SP1 is Sevice Pack 1. When you reinstall, all service packs and windows updates are erased, so you need to reinstall them as well, tho I dont know if that has anything to do with your problem.

Are you using XP Home? I ask because I have Pro and dont see any "Other Devices" under Device Manager.

One thing to try is the on/off. Wherever you see a yellow "!", Disable then Enable. Just a try that sometimes "triggers" things.

Yes I am using Home Edition.

Iv'e tried to Disable/Enable. When I do this, it prompts me to install the new hardware.

What you said before about the card missing...that sounds like it might be the problem.

As for SP1, I downloaded all the updates that it said I needed, so if it wasn't included then I may have not loaded it.

I think I will try reinstalling Windows again just in case anything went fishy.
