Update changed my settings and messed up my video!! HELP

somebody please help me I dont know what to do, ive tried everything.

i left my computer on, everything was fine and dandy, and when i came back an hour later it had done one of those annoying microsoft updates and then rebooted itself. it said "new hardware found" so i told it to search for the new hardware and install, but then it kept telling me that the hardware couldnt be found. Huh?

NOW i cant change my screen resolution to be any higher thatn 1024, which is annoying because my screen is much bigger than that. i went in and looked at my drivers and my video one has the big yellow question mark by it. does this mean that the update screwed itself up and took my video/display stuff down with it? what should i do?? i cant get in to change my settings on the display because the properties button is grayed.

i have a toshiba satellite running windows XP, if anyone needs to know. please help! i hate microsoft!

i tried downloading and reinstalling my video driver last night, but when installing it told me it couldnt find the proper software! what does that mean???

so now everytime i start my computer it still says found new hardware, and it searches for about five minutes for: Video Controller (VGA compatible)
    and it searches in C:\gecam\Driver

but it comes up with nothing still. any more ideas??? thank you so much for helping. ive got nobody else! microsoft gave me crap for help

oh i should also add, i cant do system restore because i bought this laptop as a display laptop from office depot, and they must have disabled system restore because ive never been able to use it.

please someone help me i have a ton of work i need to do for college

eh...are you sure you reinstall the video driver correctly?
if so,maybe you deleted your system file by mistake,or you can update your video driver in the office site which you bought from?

erm, im not sure. i tried installing it several different ways. i tried letting the wizard do it, but even though i pointed the wizard RIGHT to the file I just downloaded, it said it couldnt find it.

i also tried installing it manually through my driver guide thingy.

    is that what you mean?

when your xp updates, your video driver may get backward,so try downloading another driver software for your video card.
    also,i'not sure,either,sorry.

Can you get into Safe Mode?

If so try loading the Toshiba drivers here.

I assume you are using the Toshiba drivers specific to your computer?

If any graphics drivers are presently installed you might want to uninstall them first.

this will make me sound very stupid but i tried booting in safe mode the other night, and it gave me three options that I didnt even understand...I tried looking around in them but just saw a bunch of system information.

i know its f8 but nothing happens when i hit f8 while booting...so i tried hitting f12 and got that mumbo jumbo.

is there a special trick when doing f8??

Tap F8 between the Toshiba BIOS and yet before Windows tries to load.

Let Toshiba finish but don't let Windows start.

There is a "window to launch" there.
