    Active Disk is a disk imaging program;

    http://www.disk-image.net/

    It might be a good idea to run a file check on the O/S.

    Click START, RUN, type in

    sfc /purgecache

    This ensures that system files are copied from your Windows installation media, and files which may be infected with malware or corrupted are not copied from your drive.

    Then type in

    sfc /scannow

    Have your XP CD handy as you may need it.

    Re: DCOM
    (From the MSKB article you mentioned)

    Warning If you disable DCOM, may you may lose operating system functionality. After you disable support for DCOM, the following may result:• Any COM objects that can be started remotely may not function correctly.
    • The local COM+ snap-in will not be able to connect to remote servers to enumerate their COM+ catalog.
    • Certificate auto-enrollment may not function correctly.
    • Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) queries against remote servers may not function correctly.

    There are potentially many built-in components and 3rd party applications that will be affected if you disable DCOM. Microsoft does not recommend that you disable DCOM in your environment until you have tested to discover what applications are affected. Disabling DCOM may not be workable in all environments.

    Dear Dan,
    I tried to run restore from safe mode command prompt. I went in as Administrator account. Result: "Windows is not recognized as an internal or external command operable program or batch file"

    Am I to put a space anywhere in the CMD:? %systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe

    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
    RE MS825750

    I have always run DCOM disabled.
    My problem was in the later page 2 RE Decomcnfg.exe

    Part 2 c. LOCAL r-c Computer. I erased everything that was not local and that had anonymous. in Capitals as user.

    Should I run sfc/scannow?

    I did the cash one you mentioned.
    Hint- I have no start menu or taskbar. Working thru Task Mgn.

    Cannot see or control the AVG firewall and virus scan. (Something has been awry with that for 3 months. AVG has me reinstall all the time. Something knocks out the program ).

    I appreciate your follow up and input. I am really stuck.

    Follow the instructions jephree posted. This is a System Restore (back to a point in time).

    Start the machine and tap the F8 key. Choose Command Prompt. Then type in what jephree posted.

    Please post back if you cannot start the machine this way.
    I ran System Restore as suggested:
    Error: "Windows is not recognized is an internal external command operable program or batch file. "

    Think I ran the sfc \scannow. Started with Windows File Protection - Vertifies that protected Windows files are intack and n their original versions. Interesting that I was being asked for XP Professional cd 2. I am runnning XPsp2 Home upgraded from W8SE.
