I have been informed that these two programmes will not necessary be perfect in sorting out registry problems?

Used RegSeeker and RegScrub, for many years never had a problem. RegSeeker is a little more advanced and has a tool to tweak your system, both excellent registry programs and now they have a version for Vista.

The Registry is constantly changing as you use your computer. Many temporary settings are recorded so having a recurrence of errors is not uncommon. Rather it is common. Unused file extensions or MRU entries will always recur.
That being said: the first time that you ever use a cleaner you will probably get several hundred hits.
If you cleanup regularly you will always find some.
Cleaners vary on how deep they dig.
I use this freeware which is a moderate digger:
RegSeeker
A deep digger is jv 16 PowerTools
The current version needs to be purchased but you can still get the old freeware version here:

Before using any cleaner you should back up your registry.
ERUNT is a great free tool for that:

Hope this helps.
CCleaner, the great disk cleaning program, has an excellent registry cleaner as well. I've been using it for years and have never had a problem. That said, just in case, ensure you follow the prompts to backup the Registry before making changes to it (this advice should be followed before making any changes with any cleaner/editor). It is often necessary to scan for issues 2 or 3 times until it reports, "No issues were found".
Thank you jephree and Digerati for your suggestions.

Like I said in my eariler post, I use RegSeeker and RegScrub to maintain the registry and they are good programs, but they do have their faults. When deleting a program in Add & Remove Programs or using the uninstaller that came with that program the uninstallers most of the time don't remove the registry entry, so manually editing the registry is the only way to remove the bits and pieces that the uninstaller doesn't do.
Their have been times when manually editing the registry, I have found entries from programs that were deleted in 2003 and if you are a person who downloads a lot of programs and then uninstalls them for whatever reason the registry over the years can become quite bloated.
The registry is not a place to play around in and using registry programs to clean the registry should be used by people who are comfortable working in the registry or you might end up having to reinstall Windows. I would never tell someone to use a registry program unless they were comfortable working in the registry.![]()
