restore won't open!!

restore won't open!!
i've been trying to do a system restore but nothing happens when i click on system restore. the box just closes and then nothing. i've also lost all sound too?
any clues???

Can you access it in Safe Mode?
Note this may also be an indication of malware infestation. I recommend you run through your arsenal of anti-malware tools - or see Cleaning Out Malware.

nope, i can't open system restore in safe mode either..i have run all my anti spyware/malware aplications but to no avail

Do you get any error messages? One common cause of SR failures is low disk space - do you have plenty?

no error messages at all....it lets me get as far as going through all programmes, accesories, system tools and system restore, when i click on system restore the little hour glass icon appears for a second or so then nothing happens.
as for disc space i have over 60gig free

Then I would suggest you submit a HijackThis log for analysis. If you have completed the scans in Cleaning Out Malware, follow these instructions carefully to post your log for analysis.
Download the new version of HiJackThis
Install Hijackthis to the folder C:\Program Files\HijackThis.
Click scan and save a log file and notepad will open up with HJT inside. Save the file to a convenient location.
Also to help speed things up for you and the Moderator working on your logs please follow the instructions below:Open Hijackthis (if not still open).
Click the "Open the Misc Tools" section Button.
Click the "Open Uninstall Manager" Button.
Click the "Save list" Button.
Save it to your desktop.
Start a new thread in Spyware, Adware, Viruses and HijackThis Logs Forum - NOTE: This is the ONLY forum where HJT logs are allowed.
Include a description of your problem, list your version of Windows and a brief description of your hardware, and the steps taken thus far to clean your system of malware, and steps taken to fix the problem. Add a link back to this thread for reference.
Copy and paste the your HJT log and the Uninstall Manager List into your post.
Please be patient as log analysis takes time. A qualified expert will get with you as soon as possible.
Please post a status update back here when log analysis is complete.
