Computer boots but then won't log in

    Good Morning all.
A problem has developed with my computer where it will boot up but freezes when it gets to the user log in screen.
The only option that works is to hold in the power button to force the computer to switch off.
There are no error messages on rebooting and each time, so far at the second attempt the computer has successfully gone through to the log in screen and everything seems OK.

Running XP Home on a HP computer.

A previous thread suggested running the event viewer which I have done and there are 3 errors in the System section but looking back those 3 errors have been there for longer than the above problem. The errors are:

The PfModNT service failed to start due to the following error:
The system cannot find the file specified.

The HP Pci Information service failed to start due to the following error:
The system cannot find the path specified.

The Intel(R) AnyPoint(R) 3240 USB Modem Firmware Loader service failed to start due to the following error:
The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it.

As well as regular Anti Virus cleaning I regularly run
    CCleaner (the issues section)
    Advanced Windows Care
    Wise Disk / registry Cleaner

Can anyone suggest what to do next?

Thanks in advance for any help

    Try running Check Disk:

Go to start Run... and type: cmd

    Then type: chkdsk /f

You will be told the volume is in use do you want to run chkdsk on next boot? Type: Y and reboot.

Ran check disk and logged in successfully.
Rebooted and same problem as listed earlier.
At the user log in screen the mouse will move the cursor but right click has no effect. The computer then bleeps and the whole thing freezes.

Any problem starting in Safe Mode?

If not you might want to uninstall your current Graphics card drivers then reinstall the latest version.

When I log in in safe mode it takes a while when "loading user settings" and then a screen pops up which says use control panel to check your settings. Does this mean anything?

I logged out and rebooted in normal mode (twice) but I think I have an integral graphics card so I am not sure which driver to update.
The 1st one I tried to update just asked me to put my original HP CD into the CD drive.

Can you give me any guidance please?

Did you try the HP CD?

Otherwise the drivers will be here:

No that is the audio driver.

    You want Video.

Updated the video driver but didn't fix the problem. There are a few niggles with this computer and it has been running for over 2 years so I think I will reformat the hard drive and do a clean install but that is a job for the weekend.

    Thank you for your help
