Windows Setup Cant find Hard Drives

Hia ppl im stuck realy stuck

ive now got a brand new hard drive due to i thort it was my "Ubuntu" messing up the settings in bios but the same problem remains

ok so basicly im trying to get windows XP Sp2 back on my pc its been there b4 so it dose work, what ive done is....

    1) put the xp boot disk in the dive and booted off it go to the install drivers and put in my floppy disk and installed them then hit enter and it says "Cant find Hard Drives" blar blar blar

    2) reset the bios by taking out the battery and setting it back to "Factory Setings"

nothing is working i still get the same message

(with the old hard drive i tryed wiping ubuntu off it but it refused to move then tryed to put it in anouther mashine and wipe it but windows wouldnt see it so i "Fixmbr" and tryed a few dos based wipe programs and that didnt work hence i thort the drive was a bit Fu**ed so i got a new one to get me though)

i cant find any sata setup in the bios but there is scsi settings the the boot menu .
the board did work with the 80gb sata drive with windows on it.

    SUMMERY;
    did work fine
put ubuntu on it and worked fine
now trying to put windows back on it and says cant find hard drives
have the floppy sata drivers and raid drivers they go on fine (or seem to)
when i hit enter to install windows it says "Setup cannot find any hard drives installed on this system"

    my system is
    MSI K7n2 delta ilsr
    X700 AGP ATI
    1.7 gb Ram
sata hard drive 160gb (the biggest dirve the board could take) (hence the drivers on the floppy)

Please please please help meeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee xxxxx

Does the drive show up in the BIOS? What are your "Boot Device" settings? Yo might try enabling Boot Other Device.

Why do you say 160Gb is the biggest the board will take? I don't see that in your manual and have not heard of that before.

hay dude thank you for you reply

it dosnt show up in bois under ide or boot devices but i cant see the sata option anywere in bois atall im sure its not there alot of people have looked

boot outher devices is enabled ive tryed both ways

the old 80gb drive with ubuntu still loads ubuntu fine but when you put the xp disk in it gives the error cant find hard drives

hence the new hard drive i thort the 80gb was damaged with linux

the board take a max of 1 160gb hard drive in each sata slot its on the website http://global.msi.com.tw/index.php?f...2_no=&cat3_no=

thanks again dude keep it commin this is killing me i need my pc back

Just a point to add regarding SATA:

As far as I can see your motherboard only supports SATA I (not SATA II).

That being said the BIOS will not see a SATA II drive.

To resolve this there is a jumper on the rear of the drive to set the drive back to SATA I.

This affects the transfer rate. Sata II is 3gb/s whereas SATA I is 1.5gb/s.

Hmmm, I don't see where you said that before.

I have had drives be bad out of the box - do you have another PC to try it on? If so, give it a go, and while there, format it.

soz must of been anouther fourm yer i have 12 pcs to play with im working in a internet cafe and the hard drive is found on the outhers

new news when i press Ctrl + F to set up an array and it finds the 160 gb maxtor hard drive fine but still the problem of the "windows cant find hard drives" remains mabe ive got the wrong drivers

ive sent a email to msi direct now

but could i put the hard drive in anouth pc and install windows then move it to mine problem being the outher pcs are from the cafe and are all brand new 64bit amd's and mine it a 32bit barton will i mess up the drivers for the hard drive again

i realy wanna smash a keyboard now

but i might buy a new pc instead

No. Setting aside any legality issues with Windows licenses, when you install Windows on a PC, it automatically sets itself up for that hardware - it will choke when you move it to new hardware. You may at that point try a repair to get it to accept the new PC, but that is never pretty and often results in failure.

You say you if you hit Ctrl F to set up the array, it sees the drive - that tells me you are trying to set up a RAID. Is that true? You have two drives there? Is there an option that is not a RAID?

i dont know if its trying to setup a RAID but theres only one hard drive and im not partishoning them eather when i booted it after putting in the new hard drive again it said no aray found press Ctrl + F to set up an aray again in hope it may fix the problem but it didnt

might hit it with a hammer !
