    Disc space

    Hi

my C drive has a capacity of 10 gigs and has some 1 gig used up (in prog files and My Docs) yet i am getting a message that I am running out of space-only 152 mb free space

Any suggestions gratefully accepted. How can i check if mirroring is going on? I am using XP

    regards

    Ajmal

    Hi and welcome to D-A-L

10GB is not very large it will soon fill up, have you tried defragging?

Many thanks - I haven't tried defragging but will do. It's just that i know how much i have put on the disc - around 1 gig so i have in theory 9 gigs left.

Is it XP SP2? Do you have all the latest updates applied to it?

If you do, that'll be around 4GB gone to just the C:\WINDOWS folder, and a large amount will be taken up for hibernation file, system restore and the page file, so in the end you'll be left with very little free space.

Right-click C:\Program Files and choose "Properties". See what "size on disk" it shows the folder to be. Then do the same for C:\Documents and Settings and let us know what you find out.

just done a check on my C drive (XP and other programmes) I've used 7.94GB out of a 20GB partition

XP uses about 2GB without any other programmes or docs saved

Mine uses 3.93 GB for just the necessary WINDOWS folder with all the updates, 720KB hosts file and dllcache.

You have around 8GB gone already, if you make the WINDOWS folder 2GB, without the hiberfil.sys, pagefile and system restore allocations. Those tend to equal around 1.5-2GB.

It seems logical to me that you have very little space left on the drive.
