All drives shown as CD rom

When I open My computer all my drives look the same,CD ROM. I have 2 DVD drives but the computer only shows them as CD rom. When I put a DVD in the computer opens it as a data file showing the vob files. I can right click on a vob file and open with Power DVD and it will play. The auto run and auto play properties don't work and the DVD Movie option is gone. This started about 3 weeks ago and I've found no help with the problem using google.
If any one has had this problem and knows of a fix without reformating I would be greatfull.
I have uninstalled and reinstalled my drives and tried updating drivers with no help. A system restore is not an option because I would loose to much info and I'm not sure how far it goes back.

As XP has no internal support for the DVD format all software is dependent on the programs you have installed.

Have you uninstalled and then reinstalled all your DVD related software?

Optical drives need no drivers under XP. XP supplies all that is needed.

    Also:

The AutoRun feature or the AutoPlay feature does not work when you insert a CD-ROM in the drive

And just as a point or reference System Restore is a Registry Restore and as such does not affect data. Only registry entries. New programs would be lost, yes, as they write to the registry, but not basic data.

No I have not uninstalled and then reinstalled all your DVD related software.
I have followed all the directions from the link-mirosoft, everything looks as it is suppose to. I will try the uninstall of software and see if it makes any diference.

See Incorrect or generic Windows icon displayed for a Drive in My Computer.
