Re: Processes taking up crazy amount of memory

If I roll back to a previous version I get kicked from all the servers. The one thing I will say is that my problems started around the same time as the pb update on July 25th. I think that is when pb started to use 2 processes to run their punkbuser: pnkbusterA and pnkbusterB.

Also the admin of the americas army website said that I probally had a memory leak. Is there a way to fix that or do I need to buy new memory? I have 2 gig as it is.

No - a memory leak is a bad program, not bad memory. A leak occurs when a program does not give back memory when it is done using it. Typically, a leak occurs to one program, not many like you are experiencing.

What version of Windows? Is it fully updated?

I have windows xp professional. I have automatic updates set. Do you think it would be a good idea to upgrade to vista? If my problems would be solved by getting vista I would buy it tomorrow.

I think I might have a breakthrough here Digerati. This guy had the exact same problem as me. He gives instructions on how to fix it. The only problem is that I dont know how to defrag virtual memory and I dont know how to add more virtual memory. Is there a certain place that I can do this?

This is for those who have experienced the "Warping / Freezing effects on America's Army. First make sure your up to date with Punk buster and its loaded on your hard drive through "program files". Next...try "Defragging your "Virtual Memory" !! Then defrag your hard drive as well. I personally wasn't able to access the virtual memory thing to defrag it. But.. what i did do is simply ADD more "Virtual Memory MB's" . (mine was set to 512 MB's then I increased to 750 total MB's..my system allows for up to 1020 MB's for ALL drives in my PC for virtual memory). My warping/freezing has all but disappeared. This may not work for all but it has worked for me.. ( scarface83.. good luck, hope it works for you. )

Exact same problem??? Not even! Your complaint all along has been,
"Processes taking up crazy amount of memory."
That is WAY different from "warping and freezing"! Small amounts of virtual memory, along with small amounts of RAM, and/or small amounts of free disk space, indeed can cause a system to freeze - but that will NOT cause programs to hog memory. I have no clue what he means by warp - warp to me is a distorted image, like looking into a warped mirror at a carnival or haunted house.

Virtual Memory is determined by your Page File (PF) settings. You already said you have 2Gb of RAM which is typically considered substantial. You can check your PF by right clicking on My Computer > Properties > Advanced, then under Performance, click Settings > Advanced. Then under Virtual Memory, click change to see what your settings are. I recommend you do not change anything at this time but report back what yours says, along with how much free space you have on your drive(s).

This is what it says on that virtual memory tab.

    Drive: C:
    space available: 41209 mb
    custom size:
    initial size(MB) 2046
    Maximum size(MB) 4092

total paging file size for all drives
    minimum allowed: 2 MB
    recommended 3067
    currently allocated 2046

Also it says by default, the computer is set to use a greater share of memory to run your programs

    Adjust for best performance of

    programs or system cache

Which should I have it on?

You have more than enough VM and lots of free disk space. Therefore, once again, since your computer works fine otherwise, only has the problem with this one program, and only started after you upgraded that one program, it seems fair to suspect that program. I would stop trying to blame your computer.

Programs is right - system cache setting is for servers.

Do you meet these AA System Requirements?
