Question My computer does not work

Hi, I have an e-machines 3240, however it will not switch on, when you push the power button the fans start up and stay on (fast) normally they would go to a slow speed then XP loads.Thehard disk light comes on then just blinks.
Does anybody know what can cause this, By the way the green led on the motherboard is lit, so i dont think it is a power supply problem.

any suggestions would be most welcome

    Thanks

    Hello, and Welcome to D-A-L.

You didn't state if there is any output to the screen.

Are you using onboard (integrated) video display or a seperate video card in a motherboard slot?

    Also, could you please provide the exact model/series of this system? I went to the emachines site, but the choices available outweighed my available time to search all the products there;

Hi, thanks for the quick reply, No there is no display to the screen, only thing that is happening is the fans are on full speed. Normal start up woul be the fans, but then they would slow for XP to load, but the fans are staying at full speed and nothing else is happening, No lights etc
The machine is a UK PC world spec machine and believe it or not not listed on the e-machines website.
Its a pentium 4 2.66ghz 80gb hard drive with only 256mb of mem,

I assume that it is intergrated video card?

    Thanks

    Probably integrated video/display.

Does the machine have a floppy drive?

Can you boot the machine with either a (bootable) CD or floppy?

    Hi Dan,

It appears that I may have fixed the problem ? (by the way it would not boot from the cd/rom drive, However:

Someone told me to remove the internal battery and the jumper, then replace them... Guess what it booted into life, i even closed down the machine and re-booted and it appeared to be ok...

Not sure how this cured the problem, but hey.. It worked !!

Thank you for your help....I'll keep you updated if all works out ok.

    Thanks again

The battery removal reset the bios back to "factory defaults". This puts the system in a state which allows it to boot with almost any hardware configuration. The hard disk parameters are automatically detected, etc.

That's great that it's working again.
