    no volume icon

Recently I had to use my Windows disk to repair a problem with Windows XP Pro. Now I don't have the icon in the task bar for the volume control. I have sound, I just don't have the icon. When I go to control panel, then sound, it says it isn't installed and go to add/remove to install it.
Where do I find it in the add/remove section?

So you get a message when you try and open Sound and Audio Devices in Control Panel?

If this is the case, then you probably need to install an up to date audio driver. Do you know the make and model of your soundcard, or if you don't have a soundcard and just plug it into audio on board your motherboard, do you know the make and model of your motherboard? This way I can assist you in finding the driver.

Most likely, if you have integrated sound (speaker port is directly on the motherboard) your drivers should be here

It is highly likely it is the Realtek drivers, but you need to double check before installing something that might not be right.

    Follow these steps:
    1. Click on the Start button and then Control Panel.
    2. In the Control Panel double-click on the Sounds and Audio Devices icon.
    3. Under Device Volume put a checkmark next to the checkbox labeled Place volume icon in the taskbar.
    4. Press the Apply button and then the OK button.

If that fails, attempt to update your drivers.

    Good luck!
