Trouble installing windows xp service pack 2.
Hi, please help me. I'm trying to fix my sister's dinosaur computer.
During the SP2 Setup Wizard, at the "Inspecting Current Configuration" stage, a setup error appears:
"The file c:\windows\system32\ntoskrnl.exe is open or in use by another application".
What does this mean, and how can I fix it?
Ta.

Are you using Windows Update or an SP2 CD?
Do you have any other Operating Systems on this computer?
Also being a "dinosaur computer" are you sure the hardware is up to this upgrade?
-
I am using Microsoft Update. And yes, there is only xp pro. As far as I can tell, it hasn't had any updates since first being installed. So, I have been using microsoft update to download and install all of the updates. But now it has gotten stuck on this "ntoskrnl" issue.
The hardware seems fine in all other aspects. However, now there is another error message that appears in the icon bar at startup. It says that the version of windows is unsecure, and says to update to SP2. It's all very confusing and frustrating.
I have been searching through all sorts of troubleshooting sites, and nobody else seems to have this problem ;(

Close all other programs including your anti virus.
Do you still get the same error?
Has SP2 downloaded and is attempting to be installed or is this prior to downloading?

If you continue to have problems via Windows Update then try this download:

Hi jephree.
I have closed all the programs i could find, but i still get the same error. Is there any way to find a list of all the applications running and then close them?? When I open the Windows Task Manager, no applications appear.
And yes, I have downloaded SP2 already, and this error appears once i try to install it.
And now, I've got a nasty icon that says "This version of Winfows XP is no longer secure" and that I should install SP2 to fix it! Talk about chasing tails!
