computer with Xp pro has gone haywire

    hello everyone

My computer with xp-pro operating system has decided to go loopy!

Everything is jumping around, i.e., in win explorer when accessing one of my drives when the directory has been expanded, moving the the bar down to expose more of the directory merely causes it to jump back.

in Mozilla Firefox there is a constant rippleing sound and i cannot get to any of my bookmark sites.

i have carried out a reg cleaner programme and selected another reg back-up, all to no avail. THE KEYBOARD IS MISBEHAVING TOO, it went into capital letters there by itself.

    any clues anyone please

    regards

Check your Event Viewer via Administrative Tools.

Open the System as well as Application tabs and look for red X errors that coincide with your problem. Details here:

How to view and manage event logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP

Basic information on Event Viewer errors can be found here: EventID.Net

System Restore would have been the best bet at the beginning of the problem.

Third party registry tools are very suspect to error.

What is the make and model of the computer?

Although there might be another idea proffered a Repair Install of XP is always an option.

Thank you for replying jephree. Most of the programmes on my xp-pro machine are jumping around all over the place. I am writing this using Internet Explorer, and thank goodness, it is stable.

Both 'Moz. Firefox' and 'AOL' are hopeless to try and write or even read messages. Some programmes on my machine behave fine i.e., Flt.Sim. 2004 but most just leap up and down and are unusable.

I did manage, not very successfully I might add, to have a look at the Event Viewer, there seem to be many events , particularly today (Sunday) that have a Yellow 'Warning' sign! And others down the list with the red cross (perhaps I should call that organization) attached.

May I ask what would be your best advice? I certainly do not wish to reinstall Win-XP Pro if there is an alternative? Perhaps a'Repair' job might be the answer----I Hope!!

Can you get into Safe Mode?

If so does it make a difference?

Jephrie, from my message of a few moments ago I tried 'Safe' mode and there was no problem getting into it. When I checked the 'Event' log the same 'Warning' signs were there. It would seem that the majority of the warnings carry the same problem, i.e., 'MSSQL$SONY' or 'Userenv,' any idea please what this means?

Go to start Run... msconfig | Startup

Uncheck any Sony programs set to start.

On reboot you will be told you are in diagnostic mode. Just check the box that says: "Don't show me this again".

    Does this make a difference?

Hello jephree, no, no difference as there are not any Sony references in the msconfig file.

However, what I have done, and this my be a huge horlicks, was to delete the sony folder which contained the MSSQL$SONY, by using the 'Safe' mode.

After restarting I checked the Event Log and the Warning Sign was timed at 1215pm or so, which was the last time I fired up my machine, There was no warning for this latest start-up at 1645pm??

    regards
