Hello friends and resident experts!I need your help. For the past week or so, I have been unable to download the latest Windows updates when the usual 'shield icon' appears on my toolbar. So I've decided to go straight to the source and have my computer scanned to see which updates needed downloading. The site confirmed that the latest download (Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Tool) failed and when I checked my history, I noticed that for the past week or so the other downloads had failed as well. The site offers two solutions, which I have tried, without success. The following URL should take you there:
http://www.update.microsoft.com/wind...99768&ln=en-us
Would you mind giving me a hand here, bearing in mind that I am anything but technologically savvy? So please keep your instructions simple.By the way, I had never had problems installing the downloads before and I can't remember having done anything too exotic in the meantime that would prevent me from doing so now.
Your help is very much appreciated, as always.
Here is a first try:

Hi Jephree...
Thanks for the quick reply. Unfortunately, my problem remains whole. I switched from Automatic to Manual, as they suggested... but still get the message I got after my first attempts (which I forgot to type up here last time around, sorry)
Could not start Background Intelligent Transfer Service on Local comuter
Error 126: The specified module could not be found
I started a thread in the Spyware section recently in which I said that AVG spyware had identified a Trojan in my system. I first quarantined the infected file, as recommended then, for added precaution, I deleted itafter Neal had told me it was one of the possibilities that were available to me. The file is as follows:
C:\Windows\Options\Install\WIN_19.CAB
As I mentioned earlier, I am **NO** expert, but I was wondering whether this could have something to do with my downloading problems (the fact that the file is missing, that is). I could be (and most probably am) dead wrong. Could you look a bit further into this please? Thank you.
Any other possible suggestion as to how I can solve my problem... I haven't been able to download the updates for a number of weeks now.
Thanks
Yo, Brain.
Yes, it's as genuine as it gets.
P.S.: Thanks for the quick response. This is the first time such a situation has happened to me, and I've had XP for several years.
You could try running sfc /scannow from start Run...
You will probably asked to insert your XP CD.
Also you could try the Windows Installer Cleanup utility:
