Transfering files from laptop to desktop

My laptop is running Vista and the desktop is running XP. What is the easiest way to copy my files from my laptop to my desktop? I know they make some usb cords that allow this but not sure which kind and if it is even supported for Vista to XP.

CDs/DVDs/Internet would take way too long.

Does your desktop have two Ethernet ports? If so this is easy. Just connect the Ethernet from the laptop to the desktop then run the Network Setup wizard on both machines. They will then be linked via My Network Places.

If you do not have dual Ethernet on the desktop and do not want to add a PCI Ethernet card there are some ideas here:

So what your saying is from my router run a Ethernet cord to my laptop, then also run another Ethernet cord from the router to the desktop?

    Yes that should work.

You then need to go to start > Control Panel > Network Setup Wizard

You will need to do this on both machines. The prompts in the wizard are self explanatory.

Afterwards anything you place from either computer into the My Network Places section will be accessible from both computers in real time.
