Need some help with restoring XP
Hello, I need some advice/help on restoring a friend's cpu on XP. This is an E-Machine that I am working on. I started with command propt and used the fdisk to delete partion and then recreated a new partion.
Then I started the cpu back up with #1 restore CD from the factory but, it gets about 38% done and I get this message "can't copy ghosterr.txt" and it stops there. Any suggestion on how to get this cpu up and running?

I have done some looking into this "ghosterr.txt" and I see that there is a TON of people having this issue when it comes to restoring E-machines. "IF" noone here can help me out (which I hope someone can). If all fails, could I use a regular XP CD to use as an OS?

As you say there are many hits in Google. I remember looking into this previously as well. I am not familiar with e-Machines outside of researching but I wonder why you ran fdisk. Is this the normal method for using the recovery CD?
The Ghost is what eMachine uses as a restore. As such it would need to be on that hard drive and I'm unsure how fdisk might have affected this.
I see this one "solution" offered:

More links I guess you've seen:

As to your last question you can install any Operating System you choose.
If you use another XP CD it will need its' unique Product Key. In other words you would need to purchase a new version of XP.

Yes, I have new copy of XP I just never need to use because I bought a new pc. So, if I use that XP as a new OS what about the MB and such? Will, the new OS be good enough to use meaning, the MB/Video/Sound all work?
Btw, I did use Fdisk feature and when it restarted and formatting was going it would get about 38% done and I would get that message about ghosterr.txt. I also tried using DIR in command prompt and I typed ghost exe and I would get an error something along these lines...please use '-' or '/' and I have no idea what that means?

I would read some of those Google links first. Might find something. Here are a few that were posted here at DAL:

I remember now that ghosterr.txt was just an error text file associated with Ghost therefore very insignificant and strange that it would cause problems.
If you clean install a new XP you will need to get the motherboard drivers from eMachine and or ID the motherboard then get them from the motherboard manufacturers web site.
Or did you get a driver CD with the computer from eMachine?
You mentioned multiple disks?

Yes, there is 2 CD's with this Emachine. How will if cd #2 has the drivers?
-
I got everything working but, I have tried and tried to install the USB drivers even the ones at emachine support. Can you help me do this and everything is done man. Thanks
-
What happens when you try to install the drivers?
Can you post a link to these drivers?
I assume that the USB ports are not working?

What I did was, I went to emachine and looked up her computer.
Type is Desktop
Series is T
Model is T2042
Here is the link

When I go to device manager there is a Yellow ? by "other devices" and it is USB Controller.
Which one of those DL at emachine would have those drivers?
I pluged in my game controller and it works, but if I click on the USB Controller Telling me PCI 0 devices 29 function 7.....

Okay, I am mistaken here its "not" the usb because they all work. I wonder if it is the PCI buses on the MB not have the drivers for? ...BTW, I also had it check both CD's from the ghost CD that came with this cpu. Does this help better?
