My computer is a laptop (HP-dv8380us) running XP Media Edition.

Many times when I attempt to move or copy folders within or across drives on my laptop using my mouse (right-click & drag/drop), I get a message that says that the folder is not accessible and access is denied. This happens after I have dragged the file to the intended new folder and released the right button on the mouse (any mouse).

If I use the keyboard to Ctrl-C & Ctrl-V I don't have this problem.

I have apparently lost many Gigs of valuable information and music via this means.

Does anyone know whay this happens and how I could possibly recover my
files?

The Move command will delete the file from the "pre-move" location whereas the Copy command should leave it intact.

When you say "Many times..." this implies not all the time? Can you infer some coincidental behavior or characteristics of the files that fall under the category of "Many times..." but not all times?

As to Recovery here is a Google.

On the outside chance that it is a shell error (right click) you can try this:

Go to Start/Run and type in:

regsvr32 /i shell32

Click OK.

Restart your computer.

The problem occurs about 75% of the time when I drag and drop folders using my mouse to move the folder. If I simple copy and paste I don't get the problem.
