    monitor switching off problem

    Hello everybody,

I have a problem that has appeared recently.

My Dell monitor simply switches off, i.e. the screen goes black and the green light goes yellow. Nothing can restart it. The only thing i am able to do is to switch off the computer and restart. It seems like it is only the monitor that is switching off.

This is happening mainly at startup, just before after the win xp splash screen. sometimes during operation too. I don't have any problems while in safe mode.

    Any ideas?

    thanks in advance,

    Zurzu

it sounds to me like your graphics card is going or there is a lose connection...

check the card is properly seated and the monitor is plugged in. Also, you you have onboard video you could try??

    Thanks,

Yes checked card, reseated it. Monitor ok.
What do you mean by onboard video?
Is there a way to check whether the graphics card is deteriorating? It's not even a year old!

onboard video as in a video 'card' built in to the motherboard (you will have a blue monitor socket near yor keyboard and mouse if you have onboard video) some motherboards dont have it so they need a graphics gard...

I'm afraid the only way to test it is try a different monitor (or graphics card)

do you have a driver disk for it? if so, try re-installing the driver

    no, no onboard video card.

but i have tried a couple of things and here's something that might help to find an answer to this problem.

While in safe mode, i deleted the reference to the graphic card from the device manager. After having done this, windows restarts normally, no problems (video card driver back in device manager), except that i now find myself with the 600-something screen resolution. Well, easy, right? NO, when i try changing res. back to whatever, the screen goes black, monitor switches off, and there we are again!

I hope someone can help me, this is truly frustrating!

    thanks

    Hello again,

i have made the discovery that my voltage may not be in order. I ran Asus probe and it warns that the voltage fluctuates below between 10-12v.
Is it possible that this is effecting my card? What can cause such behaviour and what do i need to modify/change to remedy this? The other voltages seem to be ok.

    thanks again,

    zurzu
