Red face PLZ HELP - So Nearly There!!

I have spent weeks building a new computer, I am so close to succeeding - But, how can I find and copy the required information from the old computer (still running, in fact I'm on it now) regarding internet/modem settings? That is to say that I have set up the new computer regarding all software and programmes, but do not have the remotest idea where to start to be able to connect to the internet!! Is there a site that will provide me a walk through instruction? I must sound pretty stupid but I have had no involvement whatsoever with the setting up of an internet connection as it was done by my ex husband. Of course I am on line now, I just turn on the computer, but how an I find the settings to transfer onto the new one? I would simply call in an engineer but at this moment I have no funds at all to pay them. Can someone please help.
    Kindest regards
    Jaqui

What type of connection are you using?

If Ethernet just move the plug over. No setup required outside of loading the motherboard drivers for your LAN.

Or at the most running through the New Connection wizard:

start > Control Panel > Network Connections > Create a New Connection

If you need more details at this point just ask.

I am on broadband with a router with 2 other users. How do I tell the "Lan" what my mobo drivers are?
I'm pretty ace with software, but where the internet is concerned, I know nothing!
    Thankyou

After you installed XP did you install the motherboard drivers from the motherboard CD? If so your LAN drivers were installed. Also you probably have an icon down by the clock (red X through two monitors) that says "Connection Unplugged"

Now just plug in your Ethernet cord. Then go to:

start > Control Panel > Network Connections > Create a New Connection

Again if you need help getting through this wizard just ask.
