    Fatal Error rpcrt4.dll checksum

    Hi People,

When I try to boot in any mode I get the Windows screen for several minutes then I get the Blue Screen with this message:
STOP:c0000221 {Bad Image Checksum} The image rpcrt4.dll is possibly corrupt. The Header Checksum does not match the computed Checksum.
The computer is running XP Home Edition but came pre-loaded and I don't have a disc. Is there a way to get it going again? Thanks! John

What is the make and model of the computer?

If it didn't come with a disk there must be a Recovery Partition and or there was an option to create a Recovery disk.

The error indicates a damaged file and possibly a damaged hard drive.

You will need some type of boot media to get past this. The first place I would look is the computer manufacturer's manual re: System recovery.

Computer is a Toshiba Satellite A-55 S106 Laptop. I have obtained a XP Pro disc and started to reformat but the formatting reached 21% and seems to have stalled out at that point for about an hour. Is this normal or is there perhaps damage at this point on the HD?

    Normal: No.

Nor is it normal to use a Microsoft CD on top of an OEM (Toshiba) installation.

So it could be a hard drive fault or it could be Toshiba protecting itself in some manner.

If you have an independent Product Key for this XP CD and you want to follow through I would suggest formatting the drive outside of windows prior to installation. Doing so will eliminate the Toshiba version of XP and also all your Toshiba drivers. Again you will also need an independent (not otherwise used) XP Product Key.

I can look up the Toshiba manual but do not know if you have already gone too far or not to use their methods. I will try to look later on if you want.

Since it wouldn't boot normally I used the Windows XP Pro CD to go in and format it that way, booting from the CD instead of the damaged or corrupt harddrive. (I can't use the Laptop hard-drive in any other computers I have here, because an adaptor cable would probably cost more than $30.) I didn't really know any other ways to format it without it booting correctly.

First I tried to repair the windows installation, but I wasn't familiar with the options so, rather than damage it further I tried to format the computer because I'm pretty familiar with that, and didn't have anything irreplacable on the harddrive.

I deleted the original parition before formatting, I always do that just because it's the way I was taught and I don't like to experiment with computers because it tends to end bad. The formatting so far has gone the same way it does with a desktop computer, I've successfully reformatted and reinstalled windows on something like ten to fifteen computers with no problem, but this is the first laptop I've ever tried this on.

I've left the laptop formatting, and like it's been said it's stopped at 21% but given no error messages. I don't know if Toshiba would still be protecting itself, but that's a possibility. If so I have no idea how to get around that, if you even can.

Deleted the partition via the XP CD?

    Is the XP CD SP2?

    Was the Toshiba running SP2?

In such a case Windows would stop itself from being downgraded if it were still present in any form.

I would suggest formatting the drive with GParted outside of windows then try to reinstall.

Again I would check Toshiba's options if any might still be relevant.

I cannot find any Toshiba instructions for Recovery or Reinstall of XP. The last link is Drivers which you may need after installing XP.

Thanks for all the help jephree! After it stalled at 21% for 2 hours I turned off the power button and had to restart it 3 times before it finished formatting.
Once the format progress screen re-appeared it was at 20%, then within 10 seconds jumped to 100% and was done! WOW! lol
Then the normal XP installation began, whew!
We had tried the F8 for hours and were unable to get it to boot in any mode, then a friend told us laptops need F2, so once we did that we were able to get in and do the formatting.

Now we have a new problem, all the Toshiba drivers, programs, etc. have been deleted of course and the thing will not connect to the internet at all.
Not thru a direct connection to the Linksys router nor thru the wireless.

I'd suggest downloading the drivers (posted above) on another computer then burn to CD etc.

You will need to know your specific LAN device and match the driver for internet access.

As to programs if they are not on the Toshiba web site I don't know where you would find them.
