    windows update

System is a Toshiba laptop with Windows XP Home installed. I received the laptop without restore disk. The computer had several thousand, I said, thousands of virus which AVG found. Most all were in a shared folder from some P2P program. I deleted all the shared folders and that brought me down to about 250 virus which AVG was able to cure, delete, etc.
I then ran Adaware and it removed several hundred problems. CCleaner was run next for all un-necessary files. Ran CWShredder as well. I then ran HJthis and got rid of all problems. Windows defender will n ot update and when I try to use Windows update it will find the needed downloads and goes through the download proceedure but then say all installs failed. It would appear that because all the problems found and gotten rid of I now have a very corrupt and possible file damaged system. I was hoping to just make a new install or a restore but have n o disk. The system does have the CD Key number on the unit. Is it possible that I can take another OEM disk and use the number on the unit and be successful? If anyone has any ideas how to repair the DL and install of updates please let me know. The system runs quite well considering all the problems. Also meant to mention there is no error code when this happens.

    What is the exact model?

If Toshiba did not supply a CD then most likely there is a Recovery Partition accessed via a hotkey at boot.

And no you cannot use another disk unless it is Toshiba and for the same or very similar laptop.
