    Windows XP Sound Dissapeared

    Hi,

I've got a Acer TravelMate 8104 running Windows XP Pro, and has been fine for the last 18 months or so... However the other night I left my laptop running over night and when I got up in the morning I found I could not control the sound...

All the sound controls have dissapeared, and when I go into the Sound & Audio Properties in Control Panel it says no Audio Device...

I've tried reinstalling the Audio Drivers, with no success as it keeps crashing in the process... It's a Realtek HD Audio installed which I'm having the problems with...

In device manager the following are listed under Sound, Video & Game Controllers:
    - Audio Codecs
    - Legacy Audio Codecs
    - Legacy Video Capture Devices
    - Media Control Devices
    - Video Codecs

    Any help guys?

    Thanks!

    Hello
Did you check for virus lately?......
You could try doing a system restore to an earlier date?

    Start-->programs-->Accessories-->System Tools-->System Restore

If that doesn't work, I would simply backup and format the OS!..unless someone else comes up with a better solution

    Good luck!

Are you getting the drivers direct from Acer?

Also check Windows Update as they often update Windows versions of HD audio drivers.

There was no virus - deep scanned my system several times with various scanners, and restore unfortunatly didn't work!

I ended up just turning the computer off for 48 hours, and then booting it, and that worked... Smething to do with the static charges making devices unrecognisable was the conclusion given to me by a good computer friend!

Thanks for all your help tho guys!
