    Re: computer keeps restarting?.

    Hello Peeps,
ok i thought i would try a system restore back to april and when i tried a restore it said it could not restore it and no changes has been made.
I looked in the system restore help page and it says

"Antivirus utilities can affect whether your system can be restored to a previous point. If a restore point contains an infected file because the utility is not set to clean the file within the restore point, or if an infected file has been removed from a restore point by an antivirus utility because it could not be cleaned, System Restore will not recover the computer to this partial or infected state. If System Restore could not restore your computer to a previous state, and you suspect that one or more restore points contain infected files or have had infected files removed by the antivirus utility, you can remove all restore points from the System Restore archive by turning off System Restore and then turning it back on."

When i first started having troubles with the computer restarting i did antivirus scans and it found several infected files which i think were then removed.
So if i turn off my system restore and then turn it back on again will i be able to restore it back to april?. Or what does it mean?.
Thanks agian for all your help.

No. that would remove all restore points and leave you with none. It is often better to have access to an infected restore point than none at all - should you ever need it.

You can try a Repair Install first off which will (should) retain all your files and settings and programs. Good guide here:

    http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

Or you can Clean Install which will totally format the drive meaning you will need to backup and reinstall all data and programs. A good guide here:

    http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/cleanxpinstall.html

I would try a Repair Install first and see how it goes.

If the problem persists after a reinstall then it is either the motherboard drivers/ BIOS or hardware that is failing you.

    Hello

wow, still struggling with that problem!!

    1. Try the Repair Install first!!

    2. If the Repair Install doesn't work, Backup your files. You will not be able to backup applications, you will be able to backup other files such as data, music, pictures, e.t.c, anything but installed applications.

People usually backup their "My Documents", "Desktop", & "Favorites"
all of these are located @:
    C:/Documents and Settings/Username/

Backup these files onto a CD/DVD or an External Hard drive!

"yes" you use the disk you have

Once you've backed up your necessary you can go ahead with the format/re-install process of Windows XP

Here's another link on how to format/re-install Windows with pictures!!
    http://www.petri.co.il/install_windows_xp_pro.htm
The link shows how to install Windows XP PRO but its the same steps as installing Windows XP Home Edition.

Here's a link from Microsoft's website on how to install Windows XP

    Good Luck
