computer keeps restarting?.

Re: computer keeps restarting?.
Well 4 hours later and it hasn't restarted yet, I think maybe the ad-aware scan sorted it out. So my fingers are crossed, If it does it again i will be back for more help. I only want to reformat as a last result as im really not sure of what i am doing.
What does a reformat actually do? Does it just clear the whole computer and then i have to put it all back on with the back up discs i make?.
Also is it the windows xp cd i use to reformat?
Thanks for all your help!.

Hello
4 hours later in regular windows or safe mode?
formatting wipes out everything from your computer including all the softwares which you have installed and re-install the operating system re-installs the Windows XP for you!.
once you've completed formating and re-installing of the OS, you would have re-install your applications for example:Microsoft Office, iTunes, e.t.c
any softwares which you have installed before, you would have to re-install them once you've completed formatting and re-installing of the OS.
You would be able to backup your document files, such has music, pictures, word documents, favourites e.t.c, but you will NOT be able to backup any applications (office, iTunes e.t.c).
Yes, its the Windows XP CD you use to format and re-install the OS, will help with this option if you actually plan to do so
good luck!!

This happened to me a year ago. It was a non-lethal annoyance virus designed to create the non-stop restart. Google this for better instructions, but I think I recall I had to shut off allthe services beginning with the word "Remote" and shut off System Restore, clean the virus with an online scan, then turn on all the services again and reboot. Please check this out with a pro, but I got the virus twice and I fixed it twice the same way. I'm sure this is your problem.

Hello,
It was 4 hours of safe mode with no restarting, so i guess i cant be the power thingy.
Im just reading up on how to back up my stuff on the computer before doing the big reformat. I dont have a clue but im willing to give it a go.
I have installed the back up thing from the windows disc as apparently it isnt installed and you just do it from the windows xp disc. I have done this bit fine.
Now I have a question
in the back up bit it aks if i want to back up
1. my documents and settings.
2. Everyones Documents and settings.
3. All info on computer.
Do i choose 3. its only my computer? or do i just do 1.
Also it says where do i want to save this, do i save it in the computer somewhere or to a disc?.
If i save it on the computer wont it be gone when i reformat?
Thanks so much for saying you would help me Abdul, that is very kind and i do appreciate it.
Processor- what is a non-lethal annoyance virus?. I did a google search and couldnt find anything..How do you shut all services down that start with "remote" . and why does this help in cleaning a virus?.
Thanks for all your help and tips guys!.

I'd suggest also info on computer.
If you backup your computer on your computer and your computer has a crash your stuffed.
Back up on a CD or removable hard drive.

Thanks Bill, that makes sence. I will get the discs out and save all the computers info on it, then i will deal with the dreaded reformat.

If you are running OK in Safe Mode the issue is most likely outside of Windows and reinstalling is not necessary (at this point).
If you want your system scanned by our Pros follow the following path:
Please read THIS and after completing the steps outlined post a HijackThis log over in that section along with a brief description of your problem.
Do not post HijackThis logs in this section please.
After they give you an all clear please return to this thread.
