I would run either a Repair install or Clean install of XP.
If your XP CD was provided by HP I suggest going to their web site and reading the specific instructions.
In general you boot the CD and choose Setup Windows and either Repair (upgrade) or Clean install XP.

ok so i did the repair, when all was said and done, took bout 40 mins. thre were about 5 .dll files that it said it could not add, then continued on and rebooted itself, now that is all it does, the computer just keeps rebooting, boots to a black screen and then reboots again, i went in to safe mode then to put to last know configuration and it is still doing it
Damn this thing is getting on my nerves.
Any suggestions would be greatly apprecitated

ok so i have tried to repair using the xp cd again but still not much happened.
But I did get the same errors here was the first one
COM+ SET UP ERROR
Set componant com+ raised an exception while processing the C_Complete_Install set up message
d:\nt\com\com 1x\src\computersetup\comsetup\setuptilcpp (line3406)
Error code 0x8007007f
Specified procedure copuld not be found failed to load library
C:\Windows\system32\catsrv.dll
then it just continued and almost when it was finished it said that these could not load b/c they were not there or corrupted.
directdb.dll
inetcomm.dll
msoe.dll
wab32.dll
So now the computer just reboots itself after it gets past the Windows XP home edition screen.
The first time there was a dialog box that said something about Security Alert and there another time it said something about Virtual Memory is Low. and other things but they are only up there for a short time so i can't get to read everything.
Any other suggestions??

Did you ever look on the HP site for recovery options?
If a repair did not work the next step is a clean install of factory reset.
What is your exact Presario model?
Does your XP CD have an HP label?
The error mentioning D: indicates that CD is looking to an HP partition which might be a recovery partition. If you are using a CD that HP did not provide this could be the problem.

No it was not one, i didn't get one with my laptop, a friend lent me this one.
my model is compaq presario M2000
I didn't see anything that said CLEAN as an option, just repair
How do i go about getting on from HP?? should i have recieved one with my laptop??
all i seem to have now is what my sister calls an expensive door stop, i really don't want to have to replace this thing

ok, i have the cd, i am using it the way i should be but the screen started doing that funny thing again so it stops about 25 mins left with the repair, whick i am assuming is b/c of what is happening with the screen.
BUT i also have 2 cds, one is the xp recovery one and one that says application and recovery cd. should i be using that one too?
I don't know what is on the go with the damn screen
yesterday when i was using the other disk , i could get through the set up here but tonight it wont let me , cause i can't see what is happening, as time passes the screen does them funny colors and then eventually to black.
sooo frustrating

There is an OSD which is XP
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/d...=42419&lang=en
There is a Driver and Application CD which is used afterwards.
Your screen behavior indicates a faulty screen unfortunately.

and there is nothing i can do about the screen now is there?? b/c once the screen does that, the computer does nothing else, doesn't make a sound exept for the fan.
