Unhappy AutoCheck.exe not found on boot

I am getting an error message on boot. Program not found -- Autocheck.exe

I discovered this when I tried to use Partition Magic to resize a partition. C drive is down to 2GB, 13% free so I wanted to move over about 6GB more. I know of an older hotfix that caused this, but it's not on my system. I also checked the Windows\system32 directory and Autochk is there. I copied it again from the Windows CD anyway. The problem remains and Partition Magic doesn't complete. It just boots normally after the error. I ran defrag on all 3 partitions, then ran chkdsk /r. The problem remains.

    Any ideas would be appreciated.

This error often occurs when an installation (or process) was halted prior to completion. It is still trying to complete on boot.

You could try a System Restore to a point prior to using PM or try booting the Safe Mode option of Last Known Good Configuration.

Well, I restored all the way back to the day after I reinstalled the OS. Still get the Autocheck error and Partition Magic still won't run. I'm flummoxed.

Windows really doesn't like anything messing with C: once it is established. This is why I always give it at least 20GB if not an entire drive to itself.

That being said short of reinstalling XP try running fsutil dirty query C: from a command prompt. Is it reported dirty?

The fsutil reports NOT Dirty. Symantec support wants a shot at it to make their Partition Magic work. But I think they are not acknowledging the Autocheck.exe problem.

The autochk is often a knee jerk reaction of windows to protect itself.

As mentioned it does not like anything messing with its' parameters of C:

If Partition Tragic turns out to be just that you might consider an absolutely free GParted.

    But give Symantec their shot.

Ok, GParted. cool. I love utilities (which could be dangerous ). I'll give Symantec one chance tomorrow evening and then go to GParted. I'll let you know here how it turns out. Thanks!!
