It would be interesting to see if all pre-manufactured DVD/CD's work and only privately burned one's don't.

Anyway I'm just thinking out loud. Again perhaps someone else within the next day will have another idea or two for you.

Manufacturers sometimes upgrade their hardware with firmware upgrades.

They are upgrading or re-writing the internal software within the hardware.

If such an upgrade existed it would be on the web site of your DVD/CD drives manufacturer listed under the exact model that you have.
