    low disk space message??

In the last couple of days I've been getting a "low disk space" message on startup. It refers to the D drive, which on my Presario is the bit of the HD used for system restore. When I click the bubble it shows the cleanup window with 0 kb to delete as you would expect. I recently had to do a system restore, also I've just increased the memory from 256mb to 1gb. The PC is running fine. I'm running XP home with SP2.

First off I would suspect that your D partition is for System Recovery and not System Restore.

This partition is your OS CD as it were. If you ever need to factory restore your computer.

If this is correct then nothing should be being written to it.

XP System Restore is on the C: drive.

What is the verbatim message that you receive on startup?

System Recovery is what I meant.... sorry.
And system recovery is what I had to do a couple of weeks ago,

The message, verbatim, is as follows....
You are running out of disk space on PRESARIO_RP (D). To free space on this drive by deleting old or unnecessary files, click here....

When I click I get the following in a window....

    Disk Cleanup for PRESARIO_RP (D).

(There should be a colon after the D, but that produces a smiley)

    Recycle bin 0KB
Catalogue files for contents indexer 0KB

I click OK, the window goes, and life goes on as usual?

Did this message coincide with the Restore?

If so the Restore might have copied itself. Just speculation.

Have you opened D: and looked at it's contents?

I will search HP's site when I get some time and see if they have anything to say.

    jephree;

This HP document says it only pertains to HP Notebook PCs with Windows Vista and I think he said his Operating system is Xp home.

This link pertains to Windows 95, 98, Me, and XP.

This site has a lot of information on the above error and at the bottom he can type in his product number and search for his error.

    Interesting point in searching issues.

I was most looking for data on the error concerning

    HP_Recovery(D or Presario_RP(D

Which led me to the page listed for Vista although I do not think that Vista is that different from XP in this Restore/partition division.

Good point, the operating system are different but the partitions should be the same.

    Thanks for your time....

I've looked at that page, (bearing in mind a subsequent post points out that it refers to notebooks running Vista).

When I open my D drive this is what I see.
    Folder called Preload
    Locked folder called Recovery
    txt file called batch.log
    txt file called batch_test.log
    shortcut to CD drive

According to the page to which you directed me I should delete everything except the recovery folder.

When I check the Properties of the D drive this is what I see
    Used 3.43 GB
    Free 43.6 MB
    Capacity 3.48 GB

I carried out the recovery two weeks ago, and the message turned up on the 14th. April.

I did attempt a system restore before doing the system recovery, but it failed. Just a reminder that last week, after the recovery, I fitted new memory, 2 x 512mb sticks replacing one 256mb. I also replaced the CD/RW drive with a DVD/RW. I looked at the Properties of the shortcut to the CD drive contained in the D folder and since I have changed the drive the shortcut is no longer valid. Don't know if any of this is relevant but experience suggests you can't give people too much info on these occasions.

I would suggest removing all but the Recovery folder as HP suggests.

If you do not wish to delete you can move them to a new folder on C: if you want.

See if that stops the error message.
