    Upgrading my Router

    Hi everyone,

Before I start, let me say that I am a novice with all this connection stuff so please be gentle when offering any techy advice.

I am using a newish PC that I got in December 2006. It is fitted with an AMD Athlon 64x2 Dual Core Processor 4200+2.21GHz, 960MB of RAM. The Operating System is Windows XP Professional with SP2.

    I am in the UK

I have a Netgear DG834G v 2 router that I have had for a while now, which is running firmware version 1.01.00.00

My ISP (Plus Net) is providing 1MB broadband but is offering up to 8MB broadband.

Before I request an upgrade to the fast speed they have advised me to make sure everything is in tip top working order at my end and that my equipment can support the new high speed connection.

I downloaded the firmware upgrade v3.01.31 from Netgear's website and tried to run it through the Firmware Upgrade page of the router. I browsed to the file and clicked Upload. I am not sure how long such an upgrade should take but I left it for over an hour but it didn't seem to do anything.

I have the other utility that Netgear supplied called Router Recovery Utility and am not sure if I should run this. The last thing I want to do is mess everything up so it doesn't work at all.

Is it worth trying to upgrade this old router? Will it support 8MB if I am able to upgrade it? Or should I just go out and buy a new router?

Do you think that if I tried it again it would work a second time round or should I use the Router Recovery utility? That seems to indicate that it will install the upgrade.

Or will this router support 8MB without bothering to upgrade?

Any suggestions would be very welcome

Thanks in advance for your help.

    Regards

    Brian

Your router should be easily capable of handling 8Mb/s spead. There might have been a problem during download that stopped the router from upgrading. I think it should be safe to try it again. Just make sure you are downloading the correct firmware. Also, to be on the safe side, back up your existing set up.
