It's a while since I did it myself, as I now use Vista.

I take it you are booting from the XP cd, and formating from that.

I can't honestly remember at the moment how to get an unformatted drive recognised, but I know it happend to me, and I've forgotten the cure,

I know it entailed running fdisk from a floppy I believe it was from windows 98 second edition.

sorry i'm not much help at the moment,

GParted can partition your drive to NTFS.

You need to create the ISO boot disk.

From the download burn the disk image of the ISO.

If you do not have such software here is a free ISO burner:

Be reminded that formatting will wipe that drive/partition so you will use your current functionality.

I just mention this as I am not sure formating will help here.

It is strange that the BIOS sees and can work with this drive but the XP CD cannot.
