Some Advice?
Hey,
I hope i've put this in the right forum. sorry if i haven't...
Anyway if anyone could give me some idea's i'd appreciate it. I have a friend i am going to see on sunday, while on the phone to her earlier she has asked me to look at her pc while i'm there as the Keyboard & Mouse isn't working.
Whats happened is she has installed a wireless network - successfully & shut down as normal. Straight after that she has unplugged all the peripherals, monitor, keyboard, mouse wtc and relocated the pc in an upstairs bedroom to take advantage of the wireless internet connection - when she's plugged everything back in the keyboard and mouse has stopped working.
I have never seen her machine before so know none of the specs other than its a desktop PC & its on XP) etc - i don't even know if it is a USB or ps/2 mouse/keyboard, but i was wondering if anyone had any idea's of where i might start looking to fix the problem.
The more ideas the better so i can get it fixed ASAP.
Thanks all in advance.
cheers

Try the following search and refine as necessary:
"wireless keyboard" troubleshooting logitech usb
http://www.google.ca/search?hl=en&cl...G=Search&meta=
If USB, it may necessary to try all available USB ports.

Find out what kind of keyboard and mouce she has. Is it wired, or wireless?

I went round on Sunday and had a look for her. The mouse and keyboard were both ps/2 & not wireless. Just wouldn't work - no rhyme or reason for it. I swapped them for a spare set i had taken with me - still no joy - i swapped the keyboard and mouse so they were using the other ports - still no joy.
A USB mouse worked fine though. I checked the connections on the mobo but couldn't see anything wrong...
I have advised her to get a USB mouse & Keyboard but to keep her eye on it as it looks like the mobo is in trouble...
Has anyone seen this happen before? the serial ports just quit working? I asked if theree had been any kind of power surge or loss of it - but nothing...
Thanks for the help btw guys...

no this hasnt happen to me before. if she's getting USB Mouse and Keyboard, she might as well get wireless mouse and keyboards maybe?
since it'll take only 1 USB slot instead of 2.

Since computer was moved, chances are the problem is caused more by mechanical events than electrical. Look inside the contacts were mouse and keyboard connects. Verify the female pins on the computer are still there, in good shape and they are capable of making electrical contacts with the connectors coming from the mouse and the keybaord. Take the cover off of the computer, and gently press on any contact/connectors or cables that attaces to the mouse/keyboard interface. This might also be a good time to get a canned-air "dust-off" and blow all the dirt and particles off of the inside the computer and all of its boards.

Hi,
I checked the ports and as you said made sure they were connected to the mobo correctly. I also checked the contacts but couldn't see anything untoward... A friend has said that if serial ports are unplugged while the machine is still powered up can damage the ports on the mobo itself - although i have never come across that...
Kaistar, i've spoken to her after your post and suggested she get the wireless option... Seeing as its only a few pounds more she may aswell do that anyway...
Cheers Guys!
