    Exclamation Startup & Shutdown Problems

    Hey,

Ive got this problem in that when you try to startup the computer, it starts up to a black screen for quite a while before working.

    \/ \/ \/MORE DETAILED \/ \/ \/
    Press Power Button
    Award BIOS comes up
instead of loading bar Black Screen Shows
    ...
quite a while later (not sure how long, but probs 10mins+)
    ...
    Normal loading bar shows
    finishes starting up normally!

Shutting down wise, well, it just doesn't really.
    \/ \/ \/ DETAILED \/ \/ \/
    Press Start -> Shut Down
    Waits ages
    Waits
    Waits
sometimes shuts down, but 20 mins+ later. half the time you just have to hold the power button

    COMPUTER SPECS
    AMD athalon 64 processor 3200+
    1024MB RAM
200GB hard drive (about 80GB free)
    ATI radeon x850 graphics card
    2 CD/DVD rewritable drives
7 in 1 card reader and floppy

    PERIPHERALS
    60GB external firewire drive
    30GB Ipod
    4GB Flash Drive
    Microsoft Wireless Mouse & Keyboard
    Viewsonic Monitor
    HP 900 Series Printer
    Creative Speakers

i think it could possibly be a boot.ini file problem (i think it came after trying to use some xp theme/boot screen changing software, removed it now though)

Think thats all the info i can think of

Cheers for any help in advance

    Ben

You could try a System Restore to a point back when all was well.

If you cannot get back that far you can try to run check disk:

    start Run... cmd

    Then type chkdsk /f

When told the volume is in use type Y and reboot.

You can also try sfc /scannow from start Run...

You will be told to insert your XP CD and this will check and repair your system files.

Next on the list would be a Repair Install of XP.

What is the make and model of the computer?

Most manufacturer's have interactive troubleshooters and repair install guides on their support sites.
