Hey everyone

I was playing a game the other day when my computer went to a blank blew screen and locked up. I went to reboot the computer and it was no longer detecting the hard drive. I tried it on another computer and it said operating system not found. When I go to reinstall windows on the hard drive it says unknown disk a bunch of times in the box to select a partition. When I hit enter it comes up with,

A problem has been detected ad windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer. The problem seems o be caused by the following file: setupdd.sys

Now my question is, is my hard drive dead? I'm looking to recover any data I can rather than reinstall or repartition even though I can't currently do any of those either.

BIOS does not detect the drive either.

Any data can always be recovered. Slaving the drive in another computer is the easiest way.

This assumes the hard drive did not instantly implode mechanically which would be a rare case.

There is no "Blah blah usual error stuff". Every detail is vital. That's why the system is dumping it's memory.

If your BIOS does not detect the issue is deeper. Is it a SATA drive?

If so you might need to reinstall with you motherboard drivers or verify that your motherboard and SATA drive are both SATA II or if not revert your SATA drive to SATA I via the jumper.

I don't think the drivers has anything to do with it because I bought a replacement drive today and it works fine.

So all is well? You reinstalled XP and are happy?

If so just look back to the other drive to acquire its data.

If the BIOS does not see it and the SATA I / SATA II jumper is correct try different SATA ports etc.

My problem is I want to get the data off my old harddrive but the bios and windows is not detecting it. My first post had this stated but more indepth so people could help me figure out whats wrong.

Put it into another working computer as another extra drive.

From that computer's Operating System it should see this drive and give you access.

If the BIOS does not see it then it is either a SATA I/II issue or else the ports/connections/cables or a total hard drive failure.

And if its a total hard drive failure? Where do I go from there?

If the data is very valuable there are companies that can recover anything for a substantial price.

I doubt that this is the issue but troubleshooting is a very tedious and patient process although it is free.

Describing the problem in detail and what you are trying is very important.

So I have to ask myself (as I did) "So all is well?" :"It works fine".

Did you reinstall XP and all is well?

If the BIOS does not recognize the drive XP/Windows will have no clue.

If the BIOS does not recognize a SATA drive one main reason is the distinction between SATA I and SATA II but if this drive worked previously that should not be an issue.

I would recheck all your cable connections as you have been opening the case.

I installed windows on my new hard drive but when I try to reinstall windows on the drive in question I receive the messages as stated in my very first post. All the connections seem to be fine.
