printer spool
Hi, I have been trying to resolve this issue over the phone (it is not my computer) but have failed.
The problem is, there are no printers listed in the control panel under printers and faxes. When she presses "add printer" she gets an error message about printspoolsv.exe not running. The printers have been fine in the past and are connected directly through USB (not on a network). The errir is error 1068
We have tried start>run 'CMD /K SC CONFIG SPOOLER DEPEND= RPCSS'
and also 'regsvr32 wintrust.dll'
and also going to services.msc and clicking start on print spooler, it then says started next to it but then the same problem occurs
We aslso tried replacing spoolsv.exe in the system32 folder.
when she re-installed the chipset drivers and restarted, the priners appeared, she tried to print and it said you must add a printer, she tried to add a printer but got the same error.
Do you think a repair install would work?
She doesnt have an xp cd but I could use mine for it couldnt I?
any other ideas?
Thanks
Mike

The error message you get 1068 is a service dependency error. Print Spooler can't start because it thinks a service it depends on is not running.
Go into services and check its dependencies, it should just be the RPC service, which you shouldn't be able to stop, check that RPC is running.
Double click print spooler and click the dependencies tab. See if there are any other dependencies set besides rpc. If so you will want to find them in services and make sure they are set to automatic and are running.
Then try to start "Print Spooler" service, if that doesn't work, you might have to reinstall your printer drivers.

What kind of printer is she trying to add?

Thanks for the reply, i asked what was under dependancies before and she said something to do with fax, i asked if she could delete it or disable it... apparently not. I thaught this could be the problem but didnt know how to go about resolving it!
I will tell her to enable the fax thing... thanks!
The printers worked fine until she got a blue screen caused by McAffee anti virus after an update and updated her logitech webcam driver.... these are the only changes i know of
she is trying to get her HP deskjet 840c, Dell and Canon photo printer to show up.
Thanks
Mike
