wireless internet connection problem
I have a toshiba laptop running windows XP with Norton antivirus. I can connnect to my home wireless connection with no problems, but when I try to coonect to a wirless connection offered at airports or motels I will show that I am connected, but when I try to connect to the internet I get an error message of swerver not found. I have tried mutiple internet sites and internet explorer and firefox. Is this a problem with my Norton or XP? Help please I spend a lot of time in sirports and lose valuable work time by not being able to get to the internet to check and respond to e-mailes.
Thank yo to anyone who can help me resolve this problem

Norton is extremely problematic software. That being said it would be the first thing I would eliminate in searching for the solution.
Disable it and see if there is a difference.

Does Xp say that your network adapter is connected, if it is connected your problem is that you can't connect to the Internet.... right?
In device manager... Start > Run box type: devmgmt.msc
When device manager opens check network adapters to see if their are any red x's, yellow question, or exclamation marks.
You could aslo check these logs for any problems, see if any are listed for network problems.. Start > Run box type: eventvwr.msc
You don't say if you have all these devices connected to a router and if this is just a recent problem or since you've had the laptop you could not connect to the internet.
If this is just a recent problem it might be as easy as resetting your modem and router.
To reset device unplug wait 2 minutes and plug the device back in(you don't say what kind of modem) ie, cable.
If you configured your computer with a static IP address for your network, you might need a automatic IP address for your home machine.
What kind of firewall do you use? does the laptop have the sameone as your home computer or is it different.

try disabiling your windows firewall too, just not at the same time....yea

Very good suggestion from what I understand a third party firewall like zone alaram will conflict with Windows Firewall(ICF), Plus the fact ICF only monitors inbound traffic does not monitor outbound traffic.
When you configure and enable an exception, you are instructing the Windows Firewall to allow specific unsolicited incoming traffic sent from the specified scope: from any address, from a directly reachable address, or from a custom list. For any scope, enabling an exception makes the computer vulnerable to attacks based on incoming unsolicited traffic from computers that are assigned the allowed addresses and from malicious computers that spoof traffic. There is no way to prevent spoofed attacks from the Internet on connections assigned public IPv4 addresses, except to disable the exception. Therefore, you should very carefully consider and properly configure the scope of each Windows Firewall exception to minimize the associated exposure. There is no way to guarantee invulnerability once the exception is enabled.
If you go to http://www.grc.com/lt/leaktest.htm and run their firewall test expect that Windows firewall will be penetrated.
