start menu woes
Anyone run into this problem, You get your start menu set up just the way
you want it and you open a program(in this case it was real player) I was listening to the police scanner and for some reason I don't know why it messes up the start menu. This time the culprit was real player, but it has
happened with other programs.
I could use system restore and that fixes it, but you have to shut windows
down and the reboot which is a pain in the a**. so I right click program and
pin to start menu it only takes a few minutes and then everything is back to
normal until the next time.
Only happens once or twice a month, anyone know why windows is doing
this and how to fix it.
Thanks

How exactly does it mess up the start menu?
What options are you using there? Do you use the Most Recent Documents option or the Most Used Programs option or neither?

Sorry, I guess I should of been a little bit more selective when stating my problem, I use " Programs Option ".
When I say it messes up the start menu, I mean it removes the programs from the the startup menu and I have to go into program files and pin them back to the start menu.
Is their a registry hack that will lock the start menu?
Thanks

You cannot lock it if you want to use any of the "Most Recent" options.
I turn those off (set to 0) then pin what I want to the Menu. Mine never changes.
You can also use TweakUI to set permissions for what programs can or cannot be used on the Start Menu:

As to actually locking everything I see some commercial software that will do this for a price such as:

Hi jephree;
Made all the the changes, so I hope this fixes the problem, I do have powertoys for windows xp, which is tweak ui.
When this happens it's a permission issue that messes up the start menu?
Tomorrow I'm going to scan police frequency, for united states and see what's going on in the uk, I listen to the states a lot.
I have a portable scanner, but it only reaches 10 miles on a good day.
Thanks again for all the help
