Everyone will have their own opinion. Mine is IE7 and I've tried almost all available browsers.

K, it installed nine windows updates. It said that all 9 were installed. I clicked okay. It came up with The Page cannot be displayed. So, that didn't work.

    What happens dns flush.....Function failed.

ie rereg......'ieexplore' is not recognized as an internal or external command.....

went back and READ your instructions and instead of doing from command, did ieexplore from run. Nothing. Then selected tried to go online, didn't work.

Run Regsvr32......LoadLibrary ('urlmon.di") failed - The specified module could not be found.

shdocvw succeeded. Connection did not work.
mshtml succeeded. Connection did not work.
browseui succeeded. Connection did not work.

Running xp with SP2, Compaq hp, about a year old

    Appreciate your help.

vsmon.exe. Do you know what this is? Everytime I go to restart, it always pops up with this message that it cannot run it or something like that. I didn't think to ask until after I had hit ok. JL

vsmon.exe is a process associated with the ZoneAlarm firewall. It is used to monitor Internet traffic and generate alerts depending on the security rules configured by the user.

    Have you removed ZA?

What have you done to "Restore" the laptop? Did you reinstall XP completely?

What is the exact Compaq model?

Well, okay. After I realized it did not work, (it downloaded 9 updates but when I clicked ok, it went back to Page not displayed), I did each of your steps and replied to what happened on each. So, I will do by memory (a very short, old one).

Each of the regsvr32.dll's succeeded, but none of the other steps above allowed me ot get connected to IE.

I have a Compaq, XP SP2, about 2 years old. JL

Is that what you wanted to know? JL

Compaq/HP has a fairly good support site. In order to get into detailed FAQs and manuals we need the exact model:

For example your specs match a Compaq Presario V6210US but they could also match other models.

Just to verify: you have uninstalled Zone Alarm?

It is not running, but I noticed there are still some files laying around. I think my problem is I keep doing steps and thinking they work and go onto the next step (i.e. clean uninstall of zone alarm, update to ie7, etc.) I will try and go through and completely uninstall zone alarm again and see what happens. Then slowly update my programs. I appreciate your help. I will keep this page open so I can go to the sites you recommended. BTW, how do I see the Presario number without restarting and doing an F3 or F1 or whatever it is to get to the Bios? JL

With Zone Alarm out of the picture and with IE7 freshly installed and the issue persists we are seeing deeper problems. You might be in need of running a Repair Install of XP.
