    Connection coming through slowly

i posted this in the network forum too, But i feel that it is a more of a XP settings issue than my actuall network, But i dont know, please have a read.

I have no idea how to fix this issue or how it came about,

I connect to the internet via a HUB which is connected to my dads computer which is connected to a router, Now when we first had this all set up i had amazing speeds and all was great, But now in the last 7 months its gone high latency and huge lag spikes, So im 100% sure its something either me or my dad have done with the settings when i reinstalled my PC and then had to set up the network again but now its all gone a bit wrong

There is no software for the HUB or router its all confirgured within windows XP but when i look at these settings i see ancient greek

So if anyone could help me i would be more than happy to send you a cookie !

    Thanks in Advance,
    Tom

Did you change any settings on the router when you reinstalled on 2nd PC?

If not it would seem it possibly a settings issue on this pc.

Have you got a firewall running?

Does your pc now have a different network ip address than before. If so did you have any ports forwarded in the router. You may need to change these to compensate for different ip address.

This is my problem, i Dont know how to check these things , I am aware my IP is still the same i belive, But i dont know if theres a seperate IP for Networks , i just re-installed the 2nd computer (Mine) and just run Network wizard and then i was able to connect to the internet, but it was VERY slow - The motherboard i have has a built in network card and there is software for that but that makes the internet not work when my motherboard creates a connection of some sort.

Is there any info i can give to you on both of the computer that could make things clearer to a computer literate person? like log files or computer builds etc?

I will happily post them. Just say what you need to see and i will get on to it right away.

    Thanks,
    Tom

How far is your dad's computer from yours? How many RJ45 connector your dad computer has? From what you wrote it seems that the router connects via one RJ45 and your Hub connects via another. Is that right? Can you connect your computer to the router directly and see if it still works slow? If so then the problem is in your computer? If not, does your router have built in switch? Is there anyway you can bypass the hub and connect to the router directly? Chances are the problem might be in your system. First thing to do is to do some disk cleanup and some defrag and remove all unneeded files.
