not responding
My system specifications are as follows:
Packard Bell
System: Windows XP
Model: Imedia 5093
Microprocessor: Intel Pentium 2.53GH processor
RAM: 512MB DDR
Vidio Memory: nVIDIA MX440 64MB TV OUT
Hard Disk: 250GB Western Digital
Sound Chip: Stereo
Motherboard: Columbia 2
I can be using the pc and all is fine, checking e-mails and searching the web, then for no reason it will stop responding, the mouse will move but nothing will work, I restart the pc and it is ok again, some times you can start the pc and as soon as it is loaded it will play up it might freeze completely or just will not respond, I seem to have had a lot of trouble with this pc I am beginning to think Packard bell is spelt (heap of S&ŁT)

when it freezes the mouse still moves? i've had a similar issue but it totally freezes up and that was because i do not have enough RAM.
what about checking your Event Viewer? see if under "Applications" there's any red crosses and such.
Control Panel>Performance and Maintenance>Administrative Tools>Event Viewer>Applications

Hi Kaistar
I have had a look at the event viewer and there are 6 X in Application the source is application hang and 73 X in System source RASMAN /LSASRV / DCOM what ever that means.
you say maybe not enough RAM it has 512MB is it possible that this is not enough, ( I do notknow that much technical stuff) just the very basics.
this machine was given to me with no Hard drive in it, I replaced it with a 250GB then windows XP woud only show 127MB so I partitioned the hard drive so it would show a total of 250GB.

i'm not that familiar with Event Viewer issues, so most probably one of the pros will be able to tell you even clearer what to do later.
512 really is sometimes not enough. especially since you're running 250GB. that's pretty much for a 512 to handle. what apps do you usually run? ever tried cleanbooting and tweaking away all your extra start up services?
Start>Run>msconfig>Services> "hide all microsoft services" > Disable All
try that. and if you're familiar with your com,
Start>Run>msconfig>Start Up> untick programs and such you don't use much.
you should get a performance increase, but for me back then even tho i did get a performance increase i was still using too much RAM.
also, go to Task Manager, (Ctrl+Alt+Del) and under the Performance tab, how much is your PF usage? it should not be more than 512, shld not get too close to 512 as well cause if i remember correctly that's your maximum.

List your Power Supply spec
Make/Model
Total Watts
12V Amps
5V Amps
3.3V Amps
Freezing is either driver, HDD, RAM, heat or PSU related usually.
-
In the control panel power management it says for power supply non specified,
on the back of the base unit it reads power supply
A C Input 115/220-230
6/3A 60/50hz
DC Output 12Vdc
as you listed possible freezing as HDD, RAM heat or PSU related, I checked the fan to make sure it was not blocked with dust, as the HDD is a new western digital HDD, it look like the RAM, I will up grade it to 2 X 512 RAM boards, they are only Ł27 each board.
