My dads computer constantly randomly crashes. The monitor goes black (but not fully black) whilist the comptuter is still on. The only way to 'get out of it' is to reboot, the computer screen goes darker when its off meaning the screen is still displaying a dark colour. This isn't the moniter as my dad has changed moniters, please help ASAP as he is working on his P H D.

click start and rt. click on my computer

click properties

go to advanced

where it says 'Startup and Recovery' click settings

un-tick the box that says "automatically restart"

if you get a blue screen with an error code (for example 0x0000008D) write this code down and post it here, we will then be able to help you further.

If this box is already un-ticked, check that all fans are working properly... what exactly are you doing on the computer when this problem occurs?

I set my monitor to go off every 1 minute, like a sleep mode.

I also make sure my hard disk does not go off after 20 minutes.

The monitor restarts & comes on if I move the pointer (mouse) or touch a key on the keyboard.

Check there as by default turn off hard disk is usually 20 minutes.
