Slow web page access
when i am accessing the Internet i am finding that about 50% of the sites that I wish to access either take ages to load or donload at all. I cannot understand why. Sometimes i cab be on a site that laods fairly quikly then I try and access the site agin a few minutes later and it either takes ages to load or I just give it up as a bad job cos the green bar at the bottom of the screen jst seesm to freeze.. I do loads of comps and these are sites that I have accessed for a few years with little or no problem. I keep ringing tech support at talktalk but to be honest they are a complete waiste of time cos half the time they dont sem to know what they are on about. They just keep putting you on hold to knock up the cost of the call. i use TALKTALK via ADSL and cabled router i AM supposed to get speeds up of up to 8mb.
my PC is ony a couple of months old it is a duo core 2.66, with 1GbRAM, 160Gb HD, Radeon 256Mb graphics runing under WIndows XP Pro sp2.
I clear the cookies and temporary internet files file weekly. It seems that when sites wont load or are painfully slow to load my hard disk seems to be forever accessing.
I run Talktalk premium securty software.
I have very little software on hard drive which include ISP Sotwae and their security software, plus Nero and graphics card software and Adobe reader;
Any help/advice would be most appreciated
Regards
John

Accessing sites should be activating your router/modem but should not affect your hard drive.
As a brief test you could try some trusted web sites with Talktalk Security shut down.
Or you could monitor your Task Manager as you browse to see if Talktalk Security is indeed activating your hard drive.
Right click an empty area of the Taskbar and then open the Task Manager. Go to the Processes tab and see what draws CPU usage as you browse.

Hi Jephree
Thanks for your reply.
Tried what you said but only explorer seems to be pulling anything from cpu Although one option called system idle process fluctuates between 98 and 99 There are about 80 files showing in processess menu.
Still having problems when accessing some sites they either take for ever to load or I had to keep hitting refresh or they just dont load.
ISP provider doesnt seem to have a clue they thin kit may be line problem but they have told me that numerous times before.
Have 1gb memory but when machine is loaded to desktop task manager shows only about half a gig is available.

Your computer appears to be working just fine. System Idle is just the reciprocal of CPU usage: Usage = 1% Idle = 99%
XP using about half of 1GB of RAM is also quite normal.
You do have a lot of processes running. XP with IE runs about 33 processes.
You might want to post a HijackThis log for our Pros to analyze.

Please start a new thread in the HijackThis section (not here please).

See you have F-Secure. It sometimes consumes all of your CPU and disk. Especially FSAV 2007 is a wellknown killer. Try to uninstall it.

Cheers for advice.
I will try to ininstall. I will run computer for couple of days and let you know what happens.

Hi Peregrin
Sorry for late reply but PC has been in 4 repairs Windows software probs and faulty power supply.
Uninstalled all security softare and machine does access internet a little bit quicker. However, still having problems were sites start to load but don't and the PC just hangs there for ages. Take hotmail.co.uk the first page loads very quickly but once I enter user ID and password the next page takes about 45 seconds to load but if i hit refresh it loads within about 15. This applies to some of the other sites i keep having to hit refresh and these are competitions sites that i have accessed for a few years with no problems.
If i use wife's wireless enabled laptop it loads the sites with no problems even though her machine and internet connection are a lot slower that mine.
When sites do not load i can on most occasions hear the HD accessing. Checked task manager and sometomes it shows file called sychost.exe running at about 15 to 20%.

svchost is a service host. XP runs 5 of them generally without other applications running. Other applications might also load additional svchost which is a generic services identifier.
With no applications running and being active it is strange to see any CPU usage. Was XP reinstalled at the shop?
You could try terminating that svchost that is drawing the CPU. If it is a critical XP Service then XP will shut down.

Hi Jephree
Tried what you said but made no difference.
Even tried running Firefox but same problems with same sites.
Though it may be best to format HD and reinstall XP
Went to CMD mode typed in format C: but then I got the following message and dare not carry on.
Message read
Format cannot run because the volume is in use by another process.
Format may run if this volume is dismounted first. ALL OPENED HANDLES TO THIS VOLUME WOULD THEN BE INVALID.
Would you like to force a dismount on this volume (Y/N)
