    broke my cd/dvd drive?

    I got a new laptop on friday, it was working fine, but when i went to use the cd/dvd drive over the weekend it was showing the drive as "DVD-RAM" and it wont read any cd's or dvds... when i put a dvd or a cd in it takes for ever trying to load it, and then shows as there is no disk at all in the drive.


    On sat i booted it up and it was displaying as a normal cd drive, so i thought it had fixed itself, but as soon as i put a disk in it went back to being DVD-RAM again! I have tried different cd's so im sure that isnt theproblem. It was working fine when i got it friday as i have managed to install a few bits of software on the new laptop but now im stuffed as i cant get it to work!

    What is the make and model of the laptop?

    hl-dt-st dvdram gsa-4084n is a legitimate drive. Is there some reason to doubt that it is a DVD-RAM drive?

    A basic troubleshooting technique is to right click the drive in the Device Manager and choose Uninstall then reboot. This forces XP to reload the drivers.

    All that being said if problems persist I would return it to the retailer and demand a working machine.

    already tried that...

    I meant it was showing as DVD ram what ever was in there rather than CD ROM, or DVD ROM or CD rw etc.

    I have demanded a refund from HP and returned it today.

    That laptop has a DVD-RAM drive. It is another type of DVD drive.

    yeah i know it had a dvd ram drive, but it wouldnt read anything other than dvds!

    hp have admitted there was some kind of fault with it and picked it up yesterday morning, i am waiting for a call today regarding a replacment/ refund!

    HP have called, the drive was faulty, replacment should be here tomorrow
